What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical form of exfoliation of the skin's surface. This procedure removes the outermost layer of skin cells (part of the stratum corneum) and stimulates cell growth in the underlying dermis. Microdermabrasion helps give a smoother, fresher appearance to the skin. It is also used to diminish the appearance of sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, and coarse-textured skin.

Our microdermabrasion machine utilizes wands of varied sizes and coarseness for different skin types and depths of resurfacing. The wand tip is made of natural diamond chips which polish the skin and remove dead cells, which are then vacuumed back into a waste filter. We prefer natural diamond tips vs. traditional aluminum oxide crystals for skin resurfacing because of the diminished risk of the crystal residue staying on the skin and getting in the sensitive areas of nose, eyes, etc. See video below on Diamond Microdermabrasion procedure.

What To Stop Using Before Microdermabrasion

This part is important:
  • Stop using products that contain aspirin or salicylic acid before your cosmetic skin abrasion.
  • If you can, you should not smoke for a week beforehand (it improves the circulation of blood in the skin).
  • Stop using Retin-A, Renova, Differin and certain glycolic acid products for about five days before (this applies to products which you take on a daily basis).
  • Avoid sunbathing, sunbeds,  or collagen injections for two weeks before microdermabrasion

*A complimentary consultation is provided prior to each treatment

Microdermabrasion Q/A

  • Can I have microdermabrasion if I am pregnant/nursing ?
  • Can I have it if I am a teenager? (under 14 years old)

With both teenagers and pregnant or nursing women, hormones can inhibit or change the effects of microdermabrasion. It's best to wait until the hormones settle down before having it.

  • Can I have microdermabrasion if I am/have been on Accutane recently?

Accutane increases skin sensitivity which is why you should wait 6-12 months before having ANY skin resurfacing technique, not just
microdermabrasion. The same applies to recent laser surgery.

Q: What’s the Difference Between a Chemical Peel and    Microdermabrasion?

A: Both treatments are professional exfoliations that remove superficial dead skin. A chemical peel is a liquid solution made up of different ingredients. Some Chemical Peel solutions are mixtures of different natural acids and chemicals. Other Chemical Peels only consist of One Potent Ingredient (ex. Lactic Acid)The peel works by dissolving dead layers of skin.

Microdermabrasion doesn’t involve any ingredients. It is a machine that sends a pressurized spray of micro crystals against the skin and sucks the dead skin back into a filter.   The best example is like pressure washing the skin but instead of water, its aluminum oxide crystals buffing the dead skin off. Other microdermabrasion machines utilize wands of varied sizes and coarseness for different skin types and depths of resurfacing. The wand tip is made of natural diamond chips which polish the skin and remove dead cells, which are then vacuumed back into a waste filter. At the most, the skin is slightly red after microdermabrasion  and there is usually no peeling or flaking.
